About Tythe
The Tythe Barn is a family business founded in 1998 and set on the family’s working farm in the small Oxfordshire village of Launton. The venue oozes both character and style with an emphasis on the simple, honest and down to earth. As one of the most established barn venues in the country, The Tythe Barn has evolved over time, which accounts for their wealth of experience and deep understanding for the industry. The venue sets a high standard within it’s niche and offers couples the whole package from their incredibly intricate planning skills to their expertise for running a wedding day. The Tythe Barn is hired exclusively, offering indoor and outdoor ceremonies and brings together the thatched 1370 main barn, The Cowshed with its old terracotta roof, The Nook, The Shepherd’s Hut and the pretty manicured gardens.
Once here, time slows down, you’re on Tythe time and there’s a certain magic around every corner. You notice the serious commitment to detail, the passion that has touched every element and the welcoming smiles of a team that love what they do. You immediately feel at home and part of the family – from the pretty lighting set perfectly beneath the thatch, the gentle trickle of the water trough, the inviting crackle of the outdoor wood burner, the flock of sheep in the field to the cows peering over the fence – they’re all waiting to be part of your story.
Manor Farm
Manor Farm, of which The Tythe Barn is part of, is mentioned in the Domesday Book.
The History
The Tythe Barn historically dates back to circa 1370. Featuring 10 bays, thick stone walls and 17th Century roof timbers it is now a Grade II listed building.
The Barn
The Tythe Barn was used as a building to store tythes and rent was received from peasant farmers who were required to give one tenth of their produce to the local village church. Later the barn would offer shelter to lambing ewes and cattle, alongside storage for harvested grain.
Renovation Work
Work started on the renovation of the barn. The roof was restored back to the original Otmoor Reed thatch, replacing the temporary corrugated iron. Many of the original features of the historical building were restored, re-used and reinvented in the creation of the new event space.
Our First Wedding
Our first wedding took place, that of Will’s brother and sister-in-law.
New Additions
The venue space is expanded and improved with the renovation of adjoining barns to include The Cowshed, The Nook and The Shepherd’s Hut.
Tythe Works
With the onset of the global pandemic, The Tythe Barn has to adapt its space and makes a temporary transition into a co-working space.
The Farmhouse
Our beautiful wedding accommodation is launching in June 2022. The Farmhouse has been the family home of The Deeleys’ for over 500 years and located at the heart of Manor Farm. Offering seven double bedrooms including a Bridal Suite, two large reception rooms, a dining room, country kitchen, open fires, a tennis court and a wonderful wood-fuelled hot tub.
Our Approach
At The Tythe Barn we are aware of our responsibility towards the environment. Over the years we have implemented a number of measures to reduce our carbon footprint and give back to the local community that we’re so much a part of. Our approach to sustainability is a fundamental part of how we operate and we are constantly seeking new ways to be greener, more socially responsible and environmentally friendly whilst running a successful business.
